Obituary for Ruth Charlotta Walker (Schott)

Walker, Ruth Charlotta (nee Schott) died on August 19, 2017. Born October 3, 1931, in Kirksville, Missouri, to the late Dr. Marion and Fern (Thomas) Schott. Beloved wife of the late Dennis O. Walker for 47 years. Also preceded in death by her sister, Bernece Fern Behrens and nephew, Robert Leo Behrens. Survived by niece Barbara Behrens, Sewell, New Jersey; late nephew’s wife, Rebecca Behrens, Castle Rock, Colorado; grandniece and husband, Trish and Aico VanNunen, Illinois, Grandnephew and wife, Frank and Alicia Murphey, New Jersey; and great, great grandchildren and many friends.

Following WWII, the family relocated to Warrensburg, Missouri, where Dr. Schott became a professor at Central Missouri State College. It was in Warrensburg that Ruth Charlotta completed her high school education and was graduated from College High School where she was the recipient of every known accomplishment and award, including being named Class Valedictorian. She founded and edited the school newspaper, was the editor of the class yearbook, received local, state, and American Legion awards as a public speaker, represented the school at Girls’ State, was a member and president of the National Honor Society, excelled in music as a flutist, and in addition was an enthusiastic school cheerleader.

As a college student, Ruth Charlotta continued her legacy of student excellence and achievement, including the founding of CEMOST (the school’s magazine) and first editor, newspaper editor, student council member, yearbook organization editor, a selected member of “Who’s Who in American Universities and Colleges,” and at age 20 graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education as an accredited English and Speech teacher. For the next two years while her future husband served his tour of duty in Korea, she managed the Delta Sigma Epsilon national office.

Marriage in 1954 was the beginning of a lifetime of company transfers to ten different cities where substituted teaching, community services, and professional book reviews added to her resume. She was an active member of the Woman’s Court and Civics of Milwaukee, served three terms as President of The Woman’s Club of South Milwaukee, was a Past President and longtime member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, and a member of Immanuel Presbyterian Church in Milwaukee. In 2007-2008 she was named to “Who’s Who in American Women.”
Retirement meant world travel, and Ruth Charlotta and Dennis enriched their lives with tours to many foreign countries. Following Dennis’s death, niece Barbara Behrens and Ruth Charlotta continued the travel experience, beginning as passengers on the maiden voyage of the QM2 to Europe.

Committal prayers will be held on Friday, August 25, 2017 at Forest Hill Memorial Park in Oak Creek at 12:30PM. Funeral services will be held on Friday at Immanuel Presbyterian Church (1100 N. Astor St., Milwaukee) at 2:00PM. Visitation in the church parlor following the service.
