Obituary for John J Frederick

John J  Frederick
Born April 6, 1927 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Joseph B and Gertrude Frederick. Passed to eternal life on October 22, 2016. Jack was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Mathias (Gerry) and Rev. Joseph B Frederick. Survived by brother Robert and sisters Elizabeth (Neil) Naber and Mary (Bernard) Strittmatter. Jack and his beloved Margaret Mary (nee Dretzka) were married on Easter Monday, March 26th, 1951. Margaret passed to eternal life in 2012 after 61 years of blessed marriage.

Jack was a distinguished graduate of Marquette University (BS ‘47) and Marquette University Medical School (MD ‘51). He went on to serve his country as a surgical resident at Lackland AFB (San Antonio, TX) and James Connally AFB (Waco, TX). In 1958 Jack finished his surgical residency in Milwaukee as Assistant Chief of Surgery at Milwaukee’s Zablocki VA, while also establishing a private surgical practice in Cudahy, WI. Dr. Frederick was certified by the American Board of Surgery in 1960 and became a fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 1962. He was elected as President of the Milwaukee Surgical Society and was a founding member and President of the Milwaukee Academy of Surgery. He also served as Chief of Surgery and Advisory Board President at Trinity Memorial Hospital. In 1988 Dr. Frederick returned to the Zablocki VA as a staff physician and the Medical College of Wisconsin as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery where he and his late wife were Zeit fellows.

Jack and his wife Margaret enjoyed golfing and vacationing in the Charleston, SC area. Both were longtime members of Meadowbrook CC in Racine, Racine Curling Club, Seabrook Island and Kiawah Golf Clubs in South Carolina. Jack participated enthusiastically in alumni affairs at the Medical College of Wisconsin where he served as President, received the MCW Distinguished Service Award and was member of the Golden Circle. He also co-founded the Pallium Scholarship benefiting St. Francis de Sales Seminary (Archdiocese of Milwaukee).

Jack is survived by his children: Jeanne (Wolfgang) Baehr; Pat (Nabil) AbuGharbieh; Kit (Mark) Maikowski; Tom (Jocelyn) Frederick; Dan (Jan) Frederick; Mariann (Rick) Schuster; Bill (Kelly) Frederick; Paul (Lisa) Frederick; Rich (Erika) Frederick; Maureen (Mike) Winter. He is the proud grandfather to twenty-eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, friends and relatives.

The Frederick Family would like to extend a special thanks to Drs. James Mazulla, Salim Shammo, Charles Lanzarotti, and Tom Russell for their compassionate care over the years. Also special thanks to the caring staff of Wheaton Franciscan HealthCare System, Team Two at Tudor Oaks Senior Living Community and many others.

Visitation at the Nativity of the Lord Catholic Church, 3672 E. Plankinton Avenue, Cudahy WI is from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm on Thursday, October 27th. Mass of life celebration to follow. Interment at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in the Frederick Family plot.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial to the Medical College of Wisconsin (Department of Surgery), St. Francis Seminary Pallium Scholarship Fund or the charity of your choice is appreciated.
